Auckland's combined wastewater and stormwater pipe network was susceptible to overflow into the environment.  Construction of the Central Interceptor, a 14 km long, 4.5 m diameter lined tunnel will increase the network capacity and reduce the risk for wastewater overflow.

Stacey Agnew were engaged to assess the fire life safety risks during construction of the tunnel, and to recommend appropriate management of those risks.  As the tunnel precast segments are HDPE lined to protect the concrete when in use, there is a significant fuel load within the tunnel during construction.  Through specification of a misting system as part of the construction works, protection of the construction crews and the asset is achieved.
