14th Australian Tunnelling Conference

The Australasian Tunnelling Conference is a triennial industry event in which papers are presented describing  a wide range of current tunnelling projects ; proposed, in-design and under construction in the region.  The Auckland Conference concentrated on the engineering disciplines associated with; ground support, hydro-power, excavation, fire and safety, geotechnical, environmental challenges and risks, road and rail transport.

Keynote addresses were delivered by Professor Giovanni Bala; “Open issues in tunnel boring machine excavation”,   Professor Arnold Dix; “Fire protection systems – protection of people, concrete and profits” and Alan Morris “Express link – challenges of tunnelling through Hong Kong and into mainland China”.

Three collaborative papers were also presented at the conference by Stacey Agnew;

  • Design for tunnel fire life-safety; working together in the New Zealand context, Claridge E., Agnew N. pp247-258
  • Cable tunnel ventilation, Ridley P., Stacey C. pp289-258
  • Investigations for proposed up-grade of the Homer tunnel, New Zealand, Campbell A., Agnew N., Avery M., Johansen N. pp 677-693.
