Auckland's combined wastewater and stormwater pipe network was succeptible to overflow into the environment. Construction of the Central Interceptor, a 14 km long, 4.5 m wide lined tunnel will increase the network capacity and reduce the risk for wastewater overflow.

Stacey Agnew were engaged to assess the risk to fire life safety during construction of the tunnel. As the tunnel precast segments are plastic/HDPE lined to protect the conrete when in use, there is a significant fuel load within the tunnel during construction. Though specification of a misting system as part of the construction works, protection of the construction crews and the assest is achieved.
