Since 1934 the 1.7 km Sumner Tunnel has carried traffic below the Boston Harbor, connecting Logan International Airport to Boston. Deterioration of the infratructure was identified by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation initiating restoration and improvement works.

Delve Stacey Agnew, as the project fire and ventilation engineers, were able to identify an improved design that no only enhanced the performance of the tunnel ventilation design, but also eliminated the need to replace much of the ceiling exhaust duct. By taking a whole-of-project approach, a solution that was both safer and more cost/time effective was found.
